You Can Manage Cold-Weather Golf
You Can Manage Cold-Weather Golf
Golf doesn’t have to stop when the temperature drops. Playing in cold weather can be challenging, but with the right approach, it’s also rewarding. Here’s how to enjoy winter rounds while keeping your game sharp.
Dress in Layers
Wear a moisture-wicking base layer, such as Under Armour Cold Gear, an insulating middle layer, and a wind/water proof outer layer. I use a FootJoy HydroLite rain jacket. This keeps you warm without restricting movement. And if it warms up during your round, you can simply remove one layer. Don’t forget a warm hat and thermal socks.
Keep Hands, Feet, and Head Warm
I’ve always said, If you keep your hands, feet, and head warm, you will play better golf. Cold hands ruin a good swing. Keep hand warmers in your pockets, wear winter cart gloves if you’re driving a cart, and wear a nice warm hat. Even if it has a pom-pom on top! My golf shoes are always waterproof. Dry feet are warm feet. Don’t skimp on cheap golf shoes.
Adjust Club Selection
Cold air is denser, meaning shots won’t travel as far. Expect to use an extra club, especially on longer approaches.
Protect Your Golf Balls
Cold balls lose distance. Store your balls indoors the night before your round. And during your round, keep an extra ball in your pocket to keep it warmer and more responsive.
Warm Up Properly
Muscles tighten in the cold, increasing injury risk. Take extra time for golf specific stretches and a number of practice swings or practice shots on the range before your round. Hit a few chip shots onto the green to see how the greens are rolling.
Manage Expectations and Pace
Winter conditions can be tough. Focus on accuracy over distance and enjoy the challenge of adapting your game. It may take a little extra time to play your round, but I’d rather play golf than mow the lawn!!
Cold-weather golfing can sharpen your skills, build mental toughness, and provide courses that are less busy. With the right preparation, you can turn frosty rounds into some of your most memorable games.
