Put A 7 Wood In The Bag

Put A 7 Wood In The Bag

Now, more than ever, the best players in the world are putting a 7 wood in their bag and removing a long iron or hybrid. And it makes complete sense too. Long irons are more difficult to hit solidly, and offer less versatility that a 7 wood. It launches the ball higher even out of tough lies. It can be used effectively from the tee or from the ground. And can even be used like a Texas Wedge! Your new secret weapon should be a 7 wood. It will instantly improve your game!

Better Launch Angle

The design of a 7 wood allows for a higher launch angle, which can help in achieving better distance control and accuracy from the fairway. Mid-handicappers who struggle with reasonably long approach shots should definitely put a 7 wood in the bag.

 The Tough Rough

No matter how hard you try, it’s inevitable. Sometimes the ball ends up in the thick stuff. It’s usually a big ask to hit a 3 iron or 4 hybrid out of these lies and get the launch, spin, and distance you need to reach the green. The 7 wood therefore is a very versatile club to put in your bag.

Pull it out on the Par 3

Let’s be honest, most golfers are a little scared when they step up on a lengthy par 3, especially over water!  Their 3 iron does not instill the most confidence. That’s true for even the best players in the world.  This again is one of the reasons why there are more 7 woods in the bag on tour.

The simple fact is there’s a massive difference in how far you carry your 3 iron compared to a 7 wood. The 7 wood flies a lot farther, higher, and comes down softer. On those long, demanding par 3’s, a 7 wood can make those shots a lot more doable.

It’s a Versatile Club

A common mistake amateurs make with their bag setup is having too many clubs that do the same thing or go the same distance. The great thing about a 7 wood in the bag is that it can be hit a number of different distances from virtually any lie because of the loft and shorter shaft length. And many brands have adjustable heads that allow you to tailor loft, lie, and face angle to your liking.  Now you have the complete package in terms of versatility.

The Year Round Club

Whether it’s the winter wet season or hard and fast summer conditions, the high launch of a 7 wood still performs. Soft fairways and greenside areas require maximum carry. Ever wonder why your long clubs all seem to go the same distance in the winter? Well, here’s why.

The lower loft of long irons causes the ball to launch lower. With the cold air and soft course conditions, the ball doesn’t fly as far and stops a lot quicker. You need more carry in these conditions and the 7 wood delivers!

When summer hits, you need the super high launch of a 7 wood to help the ball stop faster. The higher the launch, the more spin remains to help hold the green. A lower flighted 3 iron, even if it has some spin, will not hold the green as well.

Use As A Texas Wedge

A lot of Tour players will use a fairway wood when nestled up against the fringe by the green. They do this to pop the ball up and over bad spots on the fringe and get it rolling quickly. And the best thing about this shot is it’s incredibly easy to execute. It’s basically a 7 wood putting stroke! It’s a perfect method for short game distance control. All great reasons to put a 7 wood in the bag!
